The modern account of the nature of the world is a lie not because it presents us with an outright false image of the world. Rather it is a lie of exclusion. It is a lie because of the way in which the hegemony of the modern worldview occludes the true depth of things. The modern, scientific, materialist account of the growth of a forest brings forth one aspect from the plurivocity of being. But beyond the limits of this illumination begin the withdrawal of the sacred, of the poetic, of manifold depths of the world which human beings had in other lives not yet forgotten. One task of anti-modernism, as I have come to understand it, is the rediscovery of those depths.
