The trend continues of me not making many photos the last couple months. Not really sure why, but I just haven’t been reaching for my camera as much as I had been over the course of the last year or so. We’ve been doing a lot of kayaking this summer, so I’m sure that has something to do with it. I’m less comfortable bringing a camera with me on a kayak. You know, something about watching your camera sink to the bottom of a lake and all… I tend to reach for my camera after I’ve found myself wanting it when I don’t have it. I’ll be walking somewhere and be struck by how beautiful something is around me and think, “Man, I wish I had my camera right now.” And in response to this I remember briefly about making pictures and remember to bring a camera with me the next time I go out.
We still get out on a regular basis to get Ruckus out on walks in the woods which is a good opportunity to grab the camera before I head out the door. But even then I commonly just opt to leave it behind. My relationship with photography comes and goes in waves, apparently cropping up when I’m going through some kind of emotional turmoil and lean on photography as a way of training myself to look for beauty as a counter to whatever existential drama I’m going through. I suppose these kinds of fluctuations are probably more normal than the idea that we should be production machines constantly churning along at peak levels of productive output. Something something the logic of capitalist production leaches in to our psyche, etc.. The rot is deep.
I’m pretty sure my desire to bring a camera on this walk followed a similar process to that described in the first paragraph. Walking and watching without a camera only to see something striking and remember that I should carry the camera more. So on this late August walk I remembered to grab the Leica with the 40/2.8 thrown on the front and headed off to the woods for a little stroll.
That little Voigtlander is always surprisingly good. This is probably why I haven’t sold it yet even though I talk about getting rid of it all the time. Anyways, if you’re here looking at this, thanks for taking a look.
